Members of My Pharmacy Pāpāmoa Plaza’s membership programme have been treated to an informative talk by Professor Mike Berridge of the Malaghan Institute about the development of the Covid vaccines.
The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s world-leading independent biomedical research institute with a focus on breakthrough discoveries in immunology and immunotherapyapy.
The organisation is part of an international team working on the technology and other research which enabled the Covid vaccines to be developed so quickly. The exclusive education event was the first in a series formembers of the My Pharmacy Pāpāmoa membership pro-gramme, which aims to offer an unparalleled level of service to its customers. Owner Ben Van Den Borst says the recently launched programme – a New Zealand first - offers excellent value to members and prioritises their health.
Professor Berridge, who is the research group leader of the Cancer Cell Biology Group at the Malaghan Institute, spoke about the Pfizer vaccine and answered questions about the Covid vaccination. His current research interests include cancer cell energy metabolism and mitochondrial gene transfer between cells in human disease.
The main focus of his research group is applying new knowledge and methodologies to cells, cell systems, and complex tissues and organs to the benefit of human diseases, with a particular emphasis on cancer and diseases involving altered energy metabolism. This research has contributed to the fast development of the Covid vaccines.
The research group’s vision is that better understanding of tumour cell biology, brain inflammation and anti-tumour immune responses will generate new knowledge that will lead to better management and treatment of cancer and the major neurological diseases, and enhance the well-being of our ageing population.
Benefits provided by My Pharmacy’s membership programme include seven-day-a-week access to your pharmacist, priority influenza vaccination for two adults, free prescription delivery, all fully funded government prescription co-payments included, medicine roll packaging fees included, health supplement pack service, annual medication review with the pharmacist, and more.
The next education event for My Pharmacy Members will be addressing the End of Life Choice Act.
