Sore Throat Screening
Sore Throat Screening
Sore throats left untreated can cause Rheumatic Fever
Tamariki at risk of developing rheumatic fever from a sore throat can be swabbed at community pharmacy, of which My Pharmacy Papamoa Plaza is a provider.
Tamariki are at risk of developing rheumatic fever if they are aged between 3-19 years, have a sore throat and have one of these criteria:
are Maori or Pacific
live in high-risk areas : most of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Greerton and Gate Pa in Tauranga.
live in over-crowded housing
have a family history of rheumatic fever
My Pharmacy can provide a throat swab with the help of parents/guardians of children aged 3-19 with a sore throat and one of the above risk-factors.
We are currently unable to offer this service to those patients outside the criteria set in this service by Te Whatu Ora, please see your GP or other doctor service if you think your sore throat could be a Strep infection and you believe you are at risk of Rheumatic Fever.

During the screening, a trained pharmacist evaluates symptoms and may conduct a simple swab test to check for infections such as strep throat. Based on the results, the pharmacist provides personalised advice, and if necessary, refers patients for further medical care. This service helps individuals receive timely care and support for managing sore throat symptoms.
